A General Store wrapped around a soda fountain, that has “almost everything if you can help them find it.”
Hawkins Variety Store was the May 2015 Murfreesboro Chamber Business of the Month and they held an Open House from 11:00 am – 1:00 pm on Friday May 22. Visitors were treated to samples of homemade chicken salad, pimento cheese, a variety of Hawkins’ own line of pickles, fresh ice cream malts, and exotic fruit smoothies. The winner of the drawing for two free meals was Pat Montgomery.
It has been six months since the grand reopening of Hawkins Variety Store in November 2014. They are adding new merchandise every week. The goal is to continue adding items that are unique and useful, or are old time modern. DeWayne and Francy listen to what their customers want and need and because of this the response to the store has been tremendous.
Hawkins has old time items, a large house wares/kitchen department, toys for both boys and girls, some items that haven’t been seen since your childhood, home decor, as well as general merchandise such as sewing supplies, and the everyday hard to find things like lamp oil and wicks. The Grays would like to remind everyone that their extensive house ware department, home decor, and art makes it a great place to sign up for their Bridal/Shower registry. The selection of kitchen/house wares are quality made products that will stand up to the test of time. Many items are what you may remember from your Grandma or Mother’s kitchen, but will work well in yours or can be given as a given as a gift.
They have Moon Pies (chocolate, banana and vanilla), Red Hot Suckers, Red Hotz, Lemonheads, Boston Baked Beans, Peanut Patties, Junior Mints, Cracker Jacks, lots of other candies in their well stocked candy case just right for snacking or movie night.
In addition there are souvenirs such as shirts and hats. One display holds a Southern delicacy known as “Chocolate gravy”. This delectable dish is poured over fresh hot biscuits. Maybe this dish isn’t for you, but there is a whole wall of shelves filled with Hawkins own line of jams, jellies, preserves, chow chow, salsa, syrup, BBQ Sauce and pickles of all kinds. There is also a old time “pop machine” stocked with glass bottles of Coke and Dr. Pepper.
For the old timers that remember the music Buel Hawkins played, DeWayne has continued that tradition, however, if you like the music playing, the CDs will be available for purchase in the store starting in June.
The soda fountain/sandwich bar inside Hawkins however, is a great reason to come in the door though. They have ice cream sodas, malts, ice cream novelties and hand dipped ice cream cones. Starting next month they will also be offering hand dipped sundaes and banana splits. You can enjoy all of these delectable treats inside or out at table under the awning.
To quench your thirst there is fresh brewed iced tea with lots of flavors. There are also fresh homemade pimento cheese or chicken salad sandwiches and empanadas which are the non-spicy Columbian version of a Nakadish meat pie. They have also had a fresh corn & cheese Arepa on the menu. Fresh pastries and cookies are available each morning and fresh handpicked Columbian coffee is served all day along fresh fruit smoothies made with exotic Columbian fruit like Passion fruit and Mango.
Future plans for Hawkins Variety Store are to continue adding merchandise, and the renovation of the front of the building along with a new sign on the front awning. So keep coming in and watching the store for what’s coming up next.
